In 1947 Bud Warren started the Warren Ranch and he and this horse Leo became an integral part of American Quarter Horse history. Leo lived until age 27 and for years after his death remained the leading sire of Register of Merit producing broodmares. My father, Leo and two other sires that stood at our ranch, Jet Deck and Sugar Bars were inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame at the headquarters in Amarillo, TX. and this past January 2005 Bud was honored by being inducted into the Oklahoma Quarter Horse Hall of Fame. For over 50 years the Warren Ranch has been dedicated to improving bloodlines through selective matings and continues that commitment to this day.
LEOTA W. was the reason Bud purchased Leo in 1947, her dam Swamp Angel was in foal to Leo when dad purchased her in a Tulsa sale and when the filly arrived my father knew she was special. He tracked Leo down to Fairfax, Oklahoma and found him standing in a muddy pig pen his match racing days clearly over but another destiny ahead. Leo was purchased for the sum of $2500 a tidy price in post war days of the late forties.
SUGAR BARS was an impressive son of Three Bars purchased as an outcross for Leo's offspring that added a blend of eye appeal and performance to dominate the early Quarter Horse years. One of the most outstanding products of this genetic combination was Otoe a champion on the track and show arena.

JET DECK was a bay colt by Moon Deck TB and Miss Night Bar that Jay Chambers of Littleton, CO purchased through his trainer Wilbur Stutchal and campaigned at California race tracks. At age two he was Champion Two year old, Champion Stallion, and the leading money earner for that year. As a three year old he was World Champion, Champion Stallion, and Champion 3 year old colt before retiring to stud service. Because Wilbur had trained for Bud Warren as well, he recommended the Warren Stud farm to Mr. Chambers and Jet Deck remained here until his untimely and mysterious death in 1971. Jet Deck was no less spectacular as a breeding stallion and received five championship awards and sired nine Champions prior to his death one of which was another great sire in his own right, Walter Merrick's Easy Jet. The renowned Jerry Wells of Purcel, Oklahoma took Jet Deck on the show circuit and proved the colt to be a halter Champion to add to his list of remarkable achievements. Jet Deck was found dead in his paddock August 25, 1971 from a lethal injection of barbituates from unknown assassins.
Today...
The Warren Ranch breeds registered Black Angus cattle, is licensed in Oklahoma and New Mexico in Real Estate Brokerage, and hopefully one day will find a way back to the winner's circle.
